WordPress 4.3 Billie Adds Site Icons

WordPress 4.3 “Billie”, named in honour of jazz singer Billie Holiday, adds a few things here and there, but it’s the site icon that I like most.

Remember we have to manually add a favicon.ico file to the root directory, or use a third party WordPress plugin? No more such hassle! Now you can sit back and simply pick an image from your media library (or upload a new one) of at least 512 pixels wide and tall, and boom! you’ve got yourself a site icon.

More importantly, it also doubles as an app icon, which shows up nice and neat when you add your website to home screen on a smartphone or tablet, and forget about those stupid links in your head tags. Isn’t that lovely?

Thanks, Chicken.

Working to get back. Those were the last words I heard from Chicken (Aaron Shapiro) himself, but that was March 2012. Next thing I knew, hosthideout.com was let expired, AGAIN. Lucky enough, I managed to pick it up in the aftermarket, after fending off quite a few bidders as usual.

But instead of wiping out everything Chicken did over the last 10 years (along with fellow moderators like Navin Rizwi, Allan Liska and Mark Blair at different points along the way), I decided to honour Aaron who so kindly invited me to help moderate HostHideout back in 2003, and brought me 10 years of unforgettable learning experience. If you ask me, Chicken will always remain the founder of HostHideout, and to whom I am truly indebted. And it is in this context that I humbly call myself co-founder (and not re-founder or owner). Thank you, Aaron.

Internet access is NOT a human right

I totally agree with Vinton Cerf that Internet access is NOT a human right, not only because it’s more of an enabler, tool or technology (a means to an end), but more importantly because if we set our standards this low to include things like hybrid cars and mineral water (instead of freedom to travel and clean water), human rights will no longer be universal and our high ground more difficult to hold, leaving “freedom fighters” with an impossible mission to accomplish.
